Markel is Canada’s largest trucking insurer, based on gross premiums written, and has serviced Canada’s trucking industry continuously for over 50 years, maintaining a dominant position in the Canadian trucking insurance market.

Markel distributes its products and services through a network of approximately 894 independent broker locations across Canada. These brokers include a small number of specialized trucking insurance brokers in addition to more traditional brokers who write trucking insurance as part of their business. With its unique on-line broker submission system EZ-Quote™, Markel offers easy to use web-based submission capability to brokers for their small trucking insurance accounts.

Markel provides many value-added products and services to the trucking industry to differentiate itself from the competition, including proprietary software which automates many critical functions of a trucking company, FUELogic™, a fuel price protection plan, and Simplus™, an equipment and vehicle financing program that provides attractive rates to small and mid-sized commercial insureds. Markel also has a specialized safety and training services team, made up of former trucking executives, safety managers and drivers, working in the field with clients to help them manage their fleets. Their in-depth knowledge plays an important role in helping Markel achieve its underwriting profit.

Markel was acquired by Fairfax in 1985 and subsequently by us in conjunction with our initial public offering in 2003.
